What bb. is not
Unpack by bb. is a reflection and educational tool, not therapy, diagnosis, or crisis support. bb. cannot determine another person’s intentions or mental state. Its interpretations are possibilities, not facts.
bb. is a reflection tool, not therapy and not an emergency service.
It is an AI, and it can make mistakes.
Before bb. reads what you wrote, the text goes through the AI provider’s moderation check. If it signals immediate danger, bb. shows a fixed screen with real support lines instead of a reading. If it signals possible harm or coercion, bb. answers with more care and adds support lines under the reply. Nothing from that check is stored; the only record is an anonymous event saying which of those two screens appeared, and in which language.

What is stored
Nothing. bb. has no accounts, no history and no database of conversations. What you write and what bb. answers exist only in your browser’s memory while the page is open. Refreshing or closing the tab clears them, and so does Start over.
Your browser keeps three small things of its own: a note that the email box has already been offered, a random number so that one person coming back twice is not counted as two people, and the language this site was last shown to you in. None of them says who you are, none leaves your browser except that number as a yes-or-no, and clearing your browsing data removes them.
What is not stored
Your text, bb.’s replies, names and any identifying details you include. They are not written to a database, to server logs or to analytics. Servers record only technical data about a request: the route, the status, the timing and the class of any error.
If you leave your email, it goes to Buttondown so bb. can write to you about what happens next. Nothing else is attached to it, and you can unsubscribe from any email we send.
Analytics, when they are switched on, are aggregate and cookie-free: counts of anonymous events, such as a reading finished, a reply sent, or whether you told bb. it got it. Never the content of what you write, never bb.’s replies, and nothing that follows you between visits or identifies you.
What leaves your browser
To write a reply, your text is sent over an encrypted connection to the AI provider, OpenAI: first to its moderation model, then, together with bb.’s instructions and, for a follow-up, the exchange so far, to the model that writes the reply. Requests are made with the provider’s storage setting turned off.

If you talk to bb. instead of typing, your voice is sent over an encrypted connection to our voice provider, ElevenLabs, which turns what you say into text and speaks bb.’s replies. The replies are written the same way as for text.
